~Time for a Change-up~

Holiday Madness over, time to get back into a routine. What we didn't realize was just how BADLY Aaron was off his schedule. He has really come into those tantrums, become overly sensitive to everything, and mean to his brother. For two nights in a row he didn't sleep a wink; there was much screaming and tantrums about wanting to sleep in our bed (something we've never done)... Aaron has always been a good sleeper so this was out of left field for us! This is when we stayed up real late one night talking about how to create a game changer. SO~
What Hasn't been Working:
We have active boys; they never stop. At the end of the day we settle in with a movie before dinner, but sometimes dinner isn't quite done so we start a cartoon, or on occasion even leave on the t.v. through dinner (total no-no, I know; I'm just being honest). We also skip the bath at the end of the night if we get home late, dinner goes too late, we're doing a project together, etc. Then there is the book before bed, this also gets skipped if they're being naughty or it's once again later than hoped for! The boys often get put in bed at the same time because Aaron likes to climb up Maddix's ladder and terrorize the room. Most the time if he does go in before Maddix he causes trouble until "buddy's" in bed, then they talk, giggle, goof, and monkey around until... well the other night... 10:00pm!
Not. Good. For. Anyone.
Lots of times we end up growling and them to hush up and the boys will cry to sleep after losing a cartoon the next day... you get the picture. Tears. Anger. Nightmares and restless sleep. Early wake-up. Whiney boys all day... angry parents, rushed bedtime routine. REPEAT.

After prayers and deliberations~ We have had four nights successful since we've tried our new research and ideas. Boys are sleeping. We are getting to bed earlier because of it. Aaron is so happy and joyful all day! No fits. He listens. He's kind. He wants to be a "good boy," as he says.
Creating the Quiet:
We work hard to tire them out during the day. Travis and I are putting in the needed effort to make sure that a movie is turned on no later than 4:30pm and that dinner is served no later than 6:00, as well as the t.v. goes off right at 6:00pm. We've taken the toys out of the bathtub and only left the puzzle pieces so the bath is more of a calming time, then winding them up. We dim the lights as soon as Aaron is getting out of the tub; in goes Maddix. Travis has changed his wildly animated reading time to a quieting, peaceful book reading. We've also switched from reading in his bed to reading on the couch so that bed is strictly for BED. I sing him a song, we say prayers all together and say goodnight. We removed the nightlight and opened the blinds; THIS has made a HUGE difference. He no longer has all the light to get up the ladder, and he stays in his bed. This causes him to be asleep before Maddix even gets in the room (he's out by 7:30pm). We repeat with Maddix, and mostly, he's asleep by 8:30-9:00pm.
Then they sleep in until 7:30-7:45.
Cutting Nap Time:
Cleary he is 2 1/2yrs old, naps should go; however, we've tried before and it went horrible and didn't change his sleeping whatsoever. We decided to try again. It's a work in process, but he's switching to a quiet time with books, and he's getting better at just staying in his room nicely; I think it's going well.
This has been great! I feel like Aaron is a whole new kid. We also bought a booster seat and he LOVES it. Instead of getting down and running completely WILD instead of eating, he's strapped in where he can sit tall and feel like a big boy and he eats so much better!
Now that he's throwing less fits, listening more, and learning faster, we've started him with potty training. He's wanted to, but we've all been too lazy to commit, or constantly on the go. Now that winter is on its way and we're not going anywhere we know it's the time to buckle down and create a routine of it. He's taken to the potty training very well (much better than Maddix ever did).
It's a heaven sent that Aaron has really been so nice because Maddix has taken it upon himself to really REALLY play up the attitude! That, however, is another story for another day!

No better way to end the year than with friends and family!

Last Sunday our friends Alex and Ambria flew into town and we started a week of all out fun!
Monday
Maddix ended up very sick so they boys and I stayed home while Travis took Ambria and Alex around Battery Park, Financial District, Ground Zero, The Highline, and then Time Square. We had Rosa's Pizza for dinner to start our week of takeout!

Tuesday
We were up and going since Maddix was feeling better and we headed to Park slope, had some amazing Turkish Food, Brooklyn famous blue marble ice-cream, prospect park, and then over to DUMBO to see the sights all lit up in the dark. Then ended the night with Chinese take-out.

The boys now understand what snap chat is... I don't even know
what it is...
Wednesday
This was a recovery day for all. Poor Maddix pushed it so hard for us on our Tuesday outing so other than a quick trip over to Jackson Heights for some traditional Columbian Empanadas, we just stayed in:)
Thursday
Back at it, the boys and I took Ambria and Alex back into the city and right over to the Museum of Natural History, then through Central Park. On the way home we were making good timing and SO excited that Aaron fell asleep as soon as we hit the subway... UNTIL the subway broke..
we hopped off and waited, and WAITED.. and WAITED for the next line.
Finally it came and we went another stop only to find out that ALL the rest of lines were DOWN!
We were stuck. So we went up to the street and found some people to help me order a taxi!
Then we made it home... 2hrs late.
Ambria and I walked to the store to gather the rest of our festivities for our New Years Eve Shindig!
With our friend John along for the party, the boys in bed, and the New Years show in the background we ate, played games, and then ran up the hill at midnight to watch and listen to the fireworks going off in Manhattan! It was a wonderful way to reign in our New Year here in NY!

Friday
Chinatown/ Little Italy
'nuff said!
We had Shake Shak for dinner after Ambria and Alex returned from the Statue of Liberty.
"Over-rated!"

Saturday
This was our final big day, and we were SO grateful to Gma Carol/Gpa Dave for taking the boys for the day (as well as spoiling them like crazy) so we could run around just as adults.
We started with a BIG German lunch at Zum Stamtisch, then sat in a food-coma on the subway in the City. There were THOUSANDS of people left over from New Years Eve and we were fighting clouds everywhere we went!! SOOOooo glad we didn't have the boys! NBC studios, Radio City, Rockefeller, Saks all the way down 5th avenue.. there were just people everywhere! The Cathedral was insane! But I did get to buy some make-up at the counter in Saks and then a treat at Magnolia Bakery and I felt like a BALLER carrying the bags around! After a quick trip over to Macys on 34th street we hopped a train home. Once the boys were in bed we watched our final movie all together, and wrapped up this fun trip all together!!

So pretty all lit up

That's Sacs on 5th Ave all lit up

Empire St. Building

While we were running around, our boys were playing nintendo, going to the movies, playing at the arcade, and some more nintendo; they even left without a single fight... just a few held back tears in regret that they had to leave.

Here's to a Happy New Year of 2016!
Things I'm most excited for:
To find out we matched
Where we'll be moving
Maddix starting Kindergarten
and our final four months here in NY!

Our Final Week leading up to
Christmas
Sunday Aaron got sick, so that meant most the week had to be taken easy.
We made Grinch corn and watched the Grinch.
We fed popcorn to the birds in our back alley.
Christmas Eve: We had a guest arrive... Peetie the Rabbit! He's staying with us for a few days and the boys LOVE him. Nala LOVES him, but can't have him.
We made Christmas decorations.
We watched Elf and made "Elf donuts."
We made cookies for Santa,
and we read our special Christmas books after
setting milk, cookies, elf donuts, carrots, and a 'Thank You' not for Santa!
Then bed...
... but not sleep. Not sleep for a LoNg TiMe.
Maddix even offered to help me clean so Santa could come faster.
Once the children were snuggled up in their beds, Peetie the rabbit and I watched
Christmas Vacation and prepped for the arrival!
3:45am Christmas Morning: The realization that we've entered a new stage when I registered Maddix sitting in my bed talking away. A little while later I went in their room to check on them and found him sitting
in his bed wide awake, using his little flashlight to look through the stocking Santa left at the foot of his bed; there was pure elation on his face. At 6:00am he bounds into my room ready for the day, still awake from the 15 min intervals he'd decided to grace me with all night.
FINALLY Travis made it home from his night shift (that he said "the gates of hell must have opened up" for and really gave him a run for his money), and Aaron woke up. We read our Christmas scriptures, opened presents...
... HOWEVER, the first present Maddix opened, I was ready with the camera to capture the moment and his face-PRICELESS- of pure disappointment to see clothes... CLOTHES!
He has never had such a big pouty lip in his life; thankfully, Santa's presents really delivered, and everything just went uphill from there.
We were really lucky to have so many wonderful Grandparents send us presents and it really made our Christmas special to have a piece of them with us. So we face timed, texted, and called around to say thank you and Merry Christmas.
We've eaten, snacked, napped, played, watched movies, and just sat still as we've watched the rabbit hop around. I'm so grateful that with a week full of 6 12hr shifts, that Travis had today off. And that he skipped sleeping the ENTIRE DAY (minus some doze off's) to be with us.
Oh... and most ANNOYING TOY award goes to my dad for gifting us the Despicable Me Fart Guns that the boys have carried around ALL DAY making loud fart noises:) ohhhh boy!

Peetie is obsessed with our lamp
